    3. The jokes in the Roger Moore films were so bad that I turned to my bf & asked if he's the one writing the screenplays lol.

    4. Oh yeah, it's pure cheese. Sometimes one feels like some cheese, others not.

    5. I just don't like the Roger Moore films, I think. You do then?

    6. I'd say "like" is too categorical. When one watches all the Bond movies in order, the Roger Moore movies seem weak (especially the first two). "The Spy Who Loved Me" is very watchable and "For Your Eyes Only" is decent. If I had to sum them up I'd say 'enjoyable when in the right mood', but some of them are hardly high-points in the Bond canon. It's a nice list of movies BTW. I thought my partner and I were the only people who could range from "Picnic at Hanging Rock" to "Goldfinger" and enjoy both.

  2. Interesting that you didn't like Aguirre. Most people list that as a great film. I too found it hard to love -- the Herzog film I really love is Fitzcaraldo.

So you didn't like Back to the Future, huh? I saw that movie at an impressionable age (I was 11 when it came out, and saw it theatre), but it has very a warm spot for me. Maybe I can't see it objectively.

I also enjoyed Meet the Parents; Owen Wilson in particular.

  3. Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - yes - I saw this with my mom who was named Jeanne. Have you read the book? It shows up on "best" lists from time to time

War & Peace - wonderful - watched this with my dad

Picnic at Hanging Rock - liked it - different & really well-done

Maurice - just read the book & rewatched the movie - I'm a big E.M. Forester fan...which leads me to

    Howard's End - I loved the 1992 version

    1. Yes, I've read The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. It's very good, I just didn't blog about it. Interestingly enough, I read the book before watching the film but couldn't shake the image of Maggie Smith out of my head whilst reading. She was Jean Brodie.
Agreed about Picnic at Hanging Rock being different.
Howards End, like Room with a View, lacks something, I think. Feeling? Passion? Warmth? I don't know. But those two films couldn't get me to care about the characters, and I watched Room with a View about 3 times or so because I loved Daniel Day-Lewis's performance.
      Maurice was different though.

  4. I think I get what you're saying about Howard's End. I saw the movie before I read the book. It was the book that grabbed me, and the movie was my first taste of the book, so to speak. I also really enjoyed Emma Thompson's humor (e.g. umbrella scene) and the magical quality of the house in the film.

Two other movies that came to mind are "Gallopoli" and "Year of Living Dangerously", both directed by Peter Weir. Neither had the supernatural (or something - I haven't seen "Picnic..." in a long while. But both were very distinctive and I was impressed. Gallipoli began and ended with the same music (an Albinoni adagio) and sort of mirror image scenes, like bookends.

I do like Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter. Helena especially, I love her voice.
