Whereas Joaquin Phoenix hasn't got an Oscar, although he has been nominated 3 times for his performances in "Gladiator", "Walk the line" and now "The master".
A couple of years ago Meryl Streep lost an Oscar to Kate Winslet even though Kate Winslet's not that good in "The reader".

Whether or not Daniel wins an Oscar this time, he's still 1 of the greatest actors of all time, significant, immortal. Awarding Daniel means he's no longer in this group of 9 people but up there, higher, greater, like Katharine Hepburn with her 4 Oscars.
Why I still think Daniel Day-Lewis should win:
1/ He's superb and magnificent as Abraham Lincoln, bringing Lincoln back to life.
2/ The fact that he has received lots of awards shouldn't interfere with Oscar.
3/ Awarding a 3rd Oscar shouldn't be too difficult, because 2 actors has won 3 Oscars:
- Jack Nicholson: 2 leading, 1 supporting.
- Walter Brennan: 3 supporting.
Katharine Hepburn won 4 Oscars for best actress in a leading role.
4/ If Daniel indeed becomes the 1st person to win 3 Oscars for a leading role, he deserves it. It's a recognition of his great talent, his dedication and hard work and concentration and his serious attitude about film and acting. I don't know if he's the best actor of all time- I have seen Marlon Brando in just a few films- but Daniel's certainly the best living actor, in the English-speaking world at least.
5/ More importantly, Joaquin calls Oscars bullshit. He doesn't reject the nomination, but he calls Oscars bullshit, and later, says he doesn't really mean it and apologises. Why should the academy award him, then? I hope they won't.

1st, which I've known for a while now, Martin Scorsese and Daniel Day-Lewis will reunite for the 3rd time in "Silence", after "The age of innocence" and "Gangs of New York".

Already having a prejudice that though "Silence" is unlikely to disappoint, it might be another Daniel film I refuse to watch again (together with "There will be blood", "The boxer" and "In the name of the father")- who cares about priests? and it's the 17th century!- I'm still looking forward to it because of these 2 beloved gentlemen and because of my immense love for "Gangs of New York".
"I heard you paint houses", however, sounds very very fascinating. Perhaps I haven't said that Scorsese's 1 of the 3 film directors I love the most. Among his films my favourites are "Taxi driver", "The aviator", "Gangs of New York", "Mean streets", "Goodfellas", "Alice doesn't live here any more", "Raging bull", "Cape fear", "Hugo"- other ones I've seen are "The last temptation of Christ", "The age of innocence", "The departed" and "Shutter island". "Silence" would mean Scorsese's 9th collaboration with Robert De Niro, after "Mean streets", "Taxi driver", "New York, New York", "Raging bull", "The king of comedy", "Goodfellas", "Cape fear" and "Casino", and more importantly, 1st time with Al Pacino! Isn't that unbelievable? Only now do I realise that they have never worked together.
The only problem, I think, with "I heard you paint houses" is that they aren't young any more. The fact that Martin Scorsese is 70 isn't a big deal, because, hey, Clint Eastwood still makes films at 82! But it may be different for actors. Now Robert De Niro is 69 and Al Pacino 72, I wonder what they can do in a gangster movie.
Anyhow, while the time of these 2 projects is not certain yet, I now am looking forward to, albeit with less enthusiasm, "The wolf of Wall Street", the 5th collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, after "Gangs of New York", "The aviator", "The departed" and "Shutter island".
