The villain I’d rank as second is Laura’s supremely selfish uncle, who plays a key role in how events unfold via his negligence and laziness. I’d put Percival Glyde as third, although his qualms of conscience (expressed through his inability to look at Laura while the scheme is underway) ought to make him more interesting than he ultimately is. And what about the character of Laura’s father, whose memory she reverences? As we find out later in the book, he’s not the saint she thinks he is….Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
